Creosote buildup in wood stove flues
Why it happens here
Many Thorndon villas use wood stoves as primary heat, which burns hotter and produces drier creosote than open fireplaces. Restricted air flow and cool flue temperatures let that creosote condense and harden into glaze. The problem is worse in Tinakori and Thorndon North.
Our approach
We treat glazed creosote with a chemical sweeping log or powder, then brush with a Sooteater rotary brush. We also check the stovepipe and damper for air leaks that cause cool flue temperatures. After cleaning, we advise on burn habits to slow future buildup.
